The Ottawa's

The Ottawa are a very interesting tribe. They are independent from Ojibway however they still speak the same language. Known as Anishinaabe or Anishinabemowin it is spoken by 50,000 natives in the northern United States and southern Canada.

There are five main dialects of this language: Western Ojibwe, Eastern Ojibwe, Northern Ojibwe, Southern Ojibwe and Ottawa. However the five different dialects can still understand each other. Also children are taught to speak it as a Native language. They are considered a spinoff of the Ojibwe tribe who they maintain friendly relationships with. They are known as accomplished traders. There are 15,000 in Michigan, Ontario and Oklahoma today.  They are part of an alliance that includes Ojibwe and the Potawatomi tribe. They are called the council of the three fires. This was a powerful alliance that clashed with the Iroquois Confederacy and the Sioux. The Ottawa were allies of the French. It was the Ottawa chief Pontiac Who led the Indian rebellions against the British after they took over the French colonies.
It is very interesting to learn all these facts about the Ottawa tribe. They had very strong allies, including the French who were a big benefit to them for trading purposes.
